Falcons top rival Crestview for crucial home winJuly 10, 2010 7:42 PM
Daily News
FORT WALTON BEACH – As wins go, Northwest Florida coach Billie Butler wasn’t ready to label the Falcons’ 27-6 victory at Steve Riggs Stadium over county rival Crestview a thing of beauty. Still, coming off back-to-back losses before last week’s bye, it was a much-needed win nonetheless. “We were kind of rusty,” Butler conceded. “We had too many turnovers in the redzone, which has been hurting us the last three games, but we were able to pull this one out. This was big for us, we love beating our county rivals.” Falcons’ quarterback Brian Lewis threw for a pair of touchdowns and ran for another, as Northwest Florida moved to 4-2 on the season and maintained its share of the Emerald Coast Divison lead entering the final stretch. Crestview (2-4), meanwhile, fell further behind. “It’s huge,” Lewis said. “We have a (huge) game coming up next week in Huntsville. This win helps us build some confidence moving forward.” In a game that saw the two teams combine for 11 turnovers – eight of which came in the second half – it was Lewis’ brilliance and a costly gaffe by the Thunderbirds special teams that allowed the Falcons to build 13-6 lead before the half. With the score knotted at 6-6 and just two minutes left before halftime, Crestview mishandled the snap on its punt attempt, allowing Northwest Florida to take over at the Thunderbirds six-yard line. Three plays later Lewis pushed through the Crestview defense for the go-ahead score. Charlie Williford’s point after gave the Falcons a lead it never relinquish thanks in large part to a gutsy performance by the Northwest Florida defense, as time after time the Falcons stiffened with their backs pinned against their own endzone. “If it wasn’t for our defense, we would have been in a lot of trouble,” Lewis said. Following a 42-yard interception return by Crestview’s Josh Armstrong, the Thunderbirds took over first and goal at the Falcons seven. Northwest Florida stuffed running back Ray Lewis for a one-yard gain on first down then pushed Crestview back four yards on a quarterback sack by Clayton Williams. Two plays later Crestview quarterback Brody Johnson’s fourth-down pass attempt fell to the turf. “We were missing our starting left tackle and that forced us to become one-dimensional,” Crestview coach Barry Taylor said. “(Northwest Florida) made the adjustments.” Crestview managed just 153 yards of total offense to Northwest Florida’s 298. Running back Wesley Lewis led the Falcons’ rushing attack with 66 yards on 10 carries while Kevin Davis rattled off 43 yards and a touchdown on seven carries as Northwest Florida chewed up 206 yards on the ground.
